Introduction
When I was in high school, I had an opportunity to participate in a program which connected students from different countries as pen pals. My pen pal was an American student who lived in a small town in Connecticut. We exchanged letters on a regular basis and I quickly noticed how different our lives were. However, through our communication, I not only improved my English skills but also gained insight into American culture.
First Impressions
I remember receiving the first letter from my pen pal and feeling nervous about responding. I was unsure of what to write and how to express myself. However, once I started writing, I realized that the exchange was not about being perfect, but rather about learning from each other. I also appreciated the kindness and openness my pen pal showed in her letters, which helped me overcome my shyness and express myself more confidently.
Language and Culture Exchange
As we exchanged letters, my pen pal and I learned about each other’s cultures. We talked about our daily lives, favorite hobbies, and even compared customs and traditions. I found myself not only improving my English skills but also obtaining a deeper knowledge of American culture. At the same time, I shared insights into my own culture and witnessed the fascination and curiosity of a person from a different background. It was a great experience to learn from each other.
Overcoming Misunderstandings
As with any cross-cultural exchange, we had some misunderstandings which we needed to overcome. For example, once my pen pal asked me what I ate for breakfast, and I responded that I ate porridge. She replied that she didn’t like eating \”glue,\” which I found puzzling. It turned out that \”porridge\” in our cultures meant different things. These differences, however, were a learning opportunity, and we became more careful to explain the meaning behind our words and phrases.
A Long-lasting Friendship
After several years of exchanging letters, my pen pal and I never lost contact. I even visited her in America once, which was a memorable experience. We continued to share our lives and experiences and supported each other through our ups and downs. Our pen pal exchange opened up new possibilities and led to a true friendship that has lasted to this day.
Conclusion
The experience of communicating with an American pen pal changed my life by teaching me the importance of cultural exchange and the value of friendship. Through this exchange, I improved my English skills, became more confident in expressing myself, and learned about American culture. But most importantly, I gained a friend who has enhanced and enriched my life.
